Topaz Place

Recently opened, Topaz Place is a twelve bed aging-in-place facility that is located adjacent to Heritage Village in Chilliwack. This building is singularly unique in the province in that it combines full time/ full service care with an intimate, home-like surrounding allowing individuals with cognitive difficulties to transition more effectively.

Some of the design challenges that were overcome include:

• Incorporating a full commercial kitchen into a residential style dining area
• Providing a coherent floor /wall color scheme that assists residents in recognizing their own particular sleeping quarter and washroom pod areas
• Providing circulatory corridor systems for residents while maintaining visual supervision ‘pathways’ for staff

The single storey, wood framed building  provides residents with handicapped accessible washroom facilities, common dining and living areas as well as outdoor amenity space. This facility (jointly funded by Fraser Health and B C Housing) includes geothermal heating and is constructed to LEED and R2000 standards including the use of many innovative low VOC finishes.

Aesthetically, the building exterior and landscaping make use of natural materials of wood and stone to provide for an appealing residential quality that allows for seamless integration into the surrounding neighborhood, while providing the security that the residents and staff require.
