Fraser Valley Christian High School

The educators and building committee members of this private school in Surrey approached CHP with the challenge of adding much needed teaching space to a very restricted urban site.  Paramount to the program was the need for numerous ‘pull out’ spaces that would allow students to gather in small, private groups within the school for instructional sessions with their teachers.  An ‘expressive design coupled with fiscal restraint’ was also a challenging goal set by the client.

Several major schematic floor plan schemes were systematically reviewed and analyzed by the building committee with the resulting product providing for a ‘best of all ideas’ solution including a much needed full sized gymnasium. 

Architecturally, the dominating cubist shapes of the existing school and gymnasium/ classroom block additions are ‘woven together’ with a curving, organically shaped metal façade ‘ribbon’ that defines public entry points.  The orientation and main entry of the school was shifted to the north side to take advantage of access to parking, playfields and additional security away from a major arterial thoroughfare.

As with other institutional projects currently being worked on at CHP, energy conservation initiatives including natural daylighting and ventilation techniques play an important role in this facility. Stained concrete floors, low VOC finishes, and the creative usage of natural materials will provide the students and staff with an evocative and stimulating learning environment in which to grow.
