Abbotsford Collegiate School
Abbotsford Collegiate is located in the inner city of Abbotsford and was built in 1952. Since then it has developed its own colourful history within the city. Currently it houses both School District 34 academic programs and the Career Technical Center (UFV) career and trades programs. When the School Board had this opportunity it was welcomed to combat declining enrollment and to help bolster the schools successful academic program. The school board envisioned the school to become a community hub and “neighbourhood of learning” site for the inner city students and lower income families the school serves.
After 2000, it was determined that a major seismic upgrade was required for the aging portions of the school. Also an exterior envelope upgrade is required, as well as electrical and mechanical system upgrades.
CHPA was selected to consider all the options the school district had for their school, including upgrading the existing structure, partial replacement and complete replacement of the entire school. A final decision to partially replace the school is the selected option. The 50 year old classroom blocks, shops, cafeteria and office are to be demolished while the newer Gymnasia, Abbey Arts, Music Room and Multi-Purpose Room will be upgraded and renovated.
The new design includes a central rotunda adjacent to the gymnasia allowing for a main entry and focal gathering point. The rotunda is designed to be a converging point for the school and its main corridors, joining the new structure to the renovated gymnasium wing. The rotunda is also designed to allow for the adjoining teaching spaces to open into the space in order to animate the entire school. This location also allowed for the new structure to be built while the old school is still open.
The project team for the Abbotsford Collegiate School Seismic Upgrades and Replacement is pleased to announce that a webcam has been installed looking northwest towards the future main entry and rotunda. From this location we will be able to see the progress as the 3 storey, 18m tall rotunda takes shape.
