Abbotsford Traditional Middle and Secondary School is the result of two large additions being appended to an existing, under-utilized facility in Abbotsford. The existing facility will become the secondary campus once the new gymnasium block is complete, and a new two-storey addition will create the middle school campus. The construction covered an area of about 4,500m2 bringing the capacity of the building to 1,050 students and staff.
Challenges facing the design team included:
• Upgrading the existing structure
• Servicing the new facility
• Construction while the school is occupied
• Accelerated time schedule for completion
• Creating two separate, yet harmonious, campuses in one facility
